Advocacy in Action

Hard Hats for Little Heads: The Nueces County Medical Society Alliance has organized a Hard Hats for Little Heads event every year for the past 10 years and have given away more than 1,000 helmets. In 2018, NCMSA hosted the two Hard Hats events:

  • One was held on June 10 for the Driscoll Children’s Hospital Children’s Miracle Network event at Whataburger Field, where more than 50 helmets were given away
  • The second was held on August 11 at the Nueces County Medical Society Health Fair where more than 150 helmets were given away.
  • In 2019, the NCMSA will give away helmets at both events again. For more information, call the Nueces County Medical Society office at (361) 884-5442 and leave a message for Alliance President Elizabeth Velleman.
Shop With a Cop: The NCMSA has held this event for five-plus years. In 2018 the Alliance made a donation of $1,100, and will hold the event again in 2019
Food Bank of Corpus Christi: The Alliance made a financial donation and members donated time and sorted food at the food bank in January.
Book collection and monetary donation for Driscoll Children’s Hospital Child Abuse Center in March 2019
Walk with a Doc: The first Saturday of every month participants meet at 8 am on the Texas A&M Corpus Christi campus water tower to walk and talk with local physicians.  The walk is arranged by the Nueces County Medical Society and supported and publicized by the NCMSA.

An Evening of Wine Tasting: An evening of friends, food, and fun, sampling different wines and bidding on the unknown contents of gift boxes described by a single Hashtag title.  Proceeds benefit our activities with Hard Hats for Little Heads, Shop with a Cop, and others.  Event is typically held in February or March each year. This event is headed by the Fundraising Committee chairperson.
Doctors Day: For a donation, the Alliance will publicize the names of those physicians recognized.  Additionally, these individuals are invited to join our Wine Tasting event where they will be recognized and given a token of appreciation.  This is an older fundraiser that is being brought back for 2019
First Tuesdays at the Capitol: Every other year, when the legislative session is in place the Nueces County Medical Society Alliance organizes a group of Alliance members, physicians, medical students and residents to attend First Tuesdays at the Capitol in Austin.
Legislator Visits: We organize visits with our legislators at the Capital on First Tuesdays during the legislative session; we also have informal meetings and visits with our elected officials during the off session to maintain relationships.
Border Health Conference: We attend and participate in the BHC meetings during TMA’s Annual meeting, Fall Conference and Winter Conference.
Campaign Fund Raisers: We host, participate and attend multiple legislative fundraisers for all levels of elected officials in our county.
TEXPAC Membership Drives: NCMSA includes TEXPAC Membership on our membership form. Membership is encouraged at each meeting, TEXPAC membership special designation is noted in our directory.
DOCCPAC: NCMS and the Alliance have their own PAC designated for local Judicial elections. Interviews are conducted, endorsements are decided, and support is given.
TMA Advocacy Meeting:  NCMSA attends and participates in the annual TEXPAC Advocacy meeting.
