Advocacy in Action

Hard Hats for Little Heads is one of Smith County Medical Alliance's core projects. Over the years, they have given away over 500 helmets. In 2018, SCMA held its Hard Hats event in conjunction with the Run for Prostate Cancer that attracted 660 runners. Alliance members fitted and gave away 92 helmets to Smith County children. The event was made possible by a grant from the TMA Foundation. The Alliance also donated 100 helmets to go along with Salvation Army’s gift of 1000 bicycles to kids in the community.

For the past 50 years, SMCA has held a bi-annual BookFair. This year, the BookFair celebrated its 50th year selling second-hand books, which provides funding for scholarships and other important community projects. The event takes place annually in the spring and fall.

SMCA has contributed more than $800,000 in scholarships for students to pursue careers in medicine and other health-related fields. Forty years ago, SMCA bought their own building for the BookFair and Alliance operations with the help of the Smith County Medical Society and other donors. In 2014, they quadrupled their size with the purchase of a vacant church building. SCMA customers enjoy shopping and buying books in the beautiful building.

The next SCMA BookFair is scheduled for April 4-6, 2019 and October 24-26, 2019.
