How to Ask for Membership

The most important thing to keep in mind when asking someone to join is the value that TMAA provides its members. If you love being around your Family of Medicine colleagues, volunteering within your community, building a relationship with your legislators, or participating in leadership training, you can speak to the value of the Alliance.

The Elevator Speech
How do you talk about the Alliance to others? If you struggle to describe what the Alliance does, and what it means to you, try starting with one of the sample scripts below.

1. There are three reasons to join the Alliance: (1) Meet new friends and connect with people who understand you. We are one of the few organizations providing fellowship and support for the family of medicine. (2) Direct access to legislators and the legislative process so you can help protect the practice of medicine. (3) We provide a variety of ways you can give back to our community via public health outreach programs.

2. The Alliance is a great opportunity to meet other medical families within your community and build relationships while giving back to your community. We protect the future of medicine through legislative advocacy and participate in several valuable community health programs. Whether you’d like to be more involved in advocacy, want to volunteer in local health programs, or just want to meet and have fun with other medical families in your area, there’s something for everyone with TMAA.

3. The TMA Alliance is a great place for you at every stage of your spouse's or partner's medical career. We provide mentoring opportunities for medical students, valuable networking for residents and new physicians, and an unparalleled level of support and understanding through the challenges and joys of life in a medical family. And not only is the Alliance good for you, but it offers numerous opportunities for you to be good to your community through advocacy, volunteerism, and public health education.

The Phone Script
Tasked with making phone calls, but not sure what to say? Use the sample phone script below to develop an easy, consistent message.

Hi, this is [your name] with [your county alliance]. How are you? We haven’t seen you for a while and wanted to check in with you.
I noticed you haven't renewed your membership for 2020 yet, and I wanted to see if you had any questions about it, or about the alliance in general.
It's now much easier to renew your membership, and you can do it online, by phone, or through the mail. Just go to and click "Renew" in the top-right corner. If you forgot your login information, just call the TMA Knowledge Center at (800) 880-7955. They can get you renewed over the phone, and reset your password while you're at it!
If you'd prefer to pay with a check, just mail the statement you received in the mail and send it to the address on the form. If you need a new one, just let me know and I can send it to you!
Thanks for taking the time to chat. We really appreciate having you as a member, and I hope I'll see you at [next meeting or event]! In the meantime, make sure to visit our county page on We have upcoming events, programs, and contact information there, so you can keep up with what's next for our chapter.

Responding to a "No"

I don't have time to participate in any of the events.
That's completely fine - you don't have to! Your financial support of the Alliance is just as important as volunteering, and it enables us to carry out the programs that we perform throughout the year.

I don't want to pay "state" dues.
TMAA's support is actually really important to our chapter. They provide all our infrastructure, from database management to dues billing; organize our annual meetings; and manage the website, newsletter, and other membership communications. TMAA staff is always around to answer questions and help our county take our work to the next level.

Tips & Reminders

  • Have a list of county projects or events handy, and be prepared to talk about them! As a member of TMAA and your county alliance, you are the best person to demonstrate how the Alliance can benefit you and your community. If you recently gave away 100 bike helmets to children in your community, raised money for a medical student scholarship, or helped families get out and be active at a Walk With a Doc, make sure to share!
  • Remember, it can take 2-3 "touches" before someone joins. It never hurts to reach out and invite someone to an event - be welcoming, thank them for coming, and introduce them to your fellow alliance members whenever you get a chance!
